Quotable me

So I was on the phone with Jen from Anti Gravity Surprise earlier and she mentioned that she read my quote in this week’s New City. Intrigued, I promptly went and found the article. Sure enough, there I was. Not once, but twice. It’s a good piece written by a fresh faced cute little guy named John Thompson. Read up, y’all.

So that makes three mentions of Structures Without Integrity by non-members as of late: Time Out Chicago, Flavorpill and now New City. Makes me think we should start developing another piece…one that would have to be completed and performed before Brianne moves to Florida this summer.

I didn’t know that you had gotten interviewed for New City.

Neither did I. I think I got quoted because I agreed with the writer as far as perceptions of Bridgeport go. To be fair, a lot of the people around for him to talk to weren’t from Chicago and/or hadn’t spent much time here and thus might not have known about Lenard Clark or any of the other racist tendencies the neighborhood is known for, and really still is: a friend of mine who grew up in Hyde Park and now lives in Bridgeport (and who is more or less the only black guy on the block) has told me a few anecdotes about his neighbors. While they are nice people in their own right, these particular white folks have yet to learn that the n-word is not acceptable.

Other theory: I doubt that the writer from New City had talked to anyone who had as much of a penchant for hyperbole as I do. Quoting somebody who said to steer clear of the topic of gentrification for fear of a repeat of the pea soup scene in the exorcist is much more fun to quote than something like “Oh, gentrification is a sensitive issue, let’s not talk about it anymore.”

I really doubt it was because I was the most articulate individual he spoke with.

I suppose your conversation skills should have improved from some of the stellar ones we had growing up. I doubt that our “bitch” “slut” etc. conversation would be likely to be quoted. Though I’m sure Kyle could make that happen. :P

Commented lines of code including quotations of our back and forth insult game do not count as quotations in the press.

I hope this doesn’t mean that Kyle is now going to insert that sort of thing into whatever project he’s currently working on, but this may well be all the impetus he needs to do so.

    Hey Raver,
I wish I could have taken your “Iceland( a place we’ve never been ) tour. The whole show sounds like it was a great time. And I’ve always thought you were very quotable…
